Pros: Cool phones.

Cons: Extremely expensive, horrible coverage, customer service is maddening.

Summary: Long lines at the store and frustrating customer service over the phone- you can never get ahold of a real person. The phones are nice, but the price of plans is high and the coverage is crappy. Very frustrating- I would never recommend Verizon. Period.

Growing disillusioned

Overall Rating:
2.3 out of 5
By: Drew Jones on Wednesday, October 17, 2007
From: Sheridan, WY (United States)
Experience: 10 Years
Pros: good call quality, EVDO

Cons: Data plan very expensive, some calls go right to voicemail, crippled phones

Summary: I've been with Verizon first in Connecticut, then Oregon, then Wyoming. As the years have gone by, I've slowly become disillusioned with Verizon. There's been no one problem, but more of a lack of flexibility in their plans and my growing sense of decreasing value.

Call quality has always been consistent. Dropped calls are rare, but 1 out of 5 incoming calls goes right to voicemail. Some calls ring once before going to voicemail. When traveling, some text messages can take up to 24 hours to arrive. Rural service has been improving, but still could be better. Inside office buildings reception runs from fine to poor.

Their Customer Support is no better or worse than others, and I've not had to wait long for a human being once getting through the touchtone maze. Billing mistakes have been rare, but I've had to keep calling until I got a rep who would correct the mistake.

Retail outlets can be hit or miss. Some reps are knowledgable and helpful, others are disinterested, bordering on rude, if you're not signing up for new service.

My biggest beef is the cost of the data plans for smartphones. This is one area I really feel ripped off. Sixty dollars for unlimited, forty for a very limited plan, measured in kilobytes. If you go over the limit on the measured plan, it gets expensive very, very quickly. Some months I use very little data, others a tremendous amount, so it's hard to judge what my needs for data are. EVDO broadband access is plenty fast, but not surprisingly is unavailable outside cities. I'd like to see a cheaper data that uses their slower national access which is available everywhere.

I dislike Verizon's habit of crippling smartphone features, especially using the phone as a laptop modem, ie, bluetooth dial-up networking. Paying $60 a month for unlimited data and no DUN really irritates. To my knowledge, Verizon does not carry any WiFi-enabled phones, which disappoints.

Their voice plans don't offer anything unique or compelling: no rollover minutes, no My Circle, etc. The plans are standard issue, and again a little pricey.

Verizon reminds me of the old Ma Bell (well, it was a Baby Bell): rather arrogant, impersonal, and offering dull products at its convenience. Because it's so large and has so many corporate clients, Verizon just doesn't have to worry about the consumer business beyond marketing.

Other providers in my area are now offering plans and products comparable To Verizon's but with more flexibility and lower costs. I'm ready to jump ship and take my chances elsewhere.

Drop in Service

Overall Rating:
2.3 out of 5
By: Tim O'Brien on Sunday, September 30, 2007
From: Wake Forest, NC (United States)
Experience: 4 Years
Pros: The Company has been wonderful to deal with. Customer service has always been great.

Cons: Unexpected signal lose in our home area.

Summary: We have had the service for 4 years and in that time Verizon was great to deal with. The problem started about six months ago. We stopped getting a signal at our house and with being within 1.5 miles of three towers. It was disappointing since we were considering dropping the land line. Verizon's best excuse was that the vegetation was blocking the signal even though we were in the same house and there was less vegetation due to new construction. Looking for a new carrier.

After 7 years of service, I give up!

Overall Rating:
1.3 out of 5
By: K Jackstadt on Thursday, September 27, 2007
From: Glen Carbon, IL (United States)
Experience: 7 Years
Pros: None

Cons: Trouble with family plans, errs in bills, added unwanted features, problem with Razor phone, Bad reception, etc. universities.

Summary: We have had nothing but problems with Verizon/family plan that includes 4 phones. Whether you go to the Verizon store or call, you can expect to spend atleast an hour talking to representatives. We have had errs in our bills. When we are warranted a refund, it takes 3 months to get the check in the mail. What if we took 3 months to pay the bill? Unwanted features are added to our phones everytime one of us gets a new phone. I was told that my Razor phone probably has water issues because I took it out in the extreme heat. We live in the St. Louis area, summers are hot but I would expect that my phone could make it thru it. Our son goes to University of Oklahoma, we were told his phone would get reception. After a year of problems, today I was told that we will be able to get out of the contract because of the lack of reception. Which is great except that the other 3 of us are still locked in. It's just problems after problems. I was stunned to see that this company is the hightest rated! I sent out e-mails to family and friends. ATT won with glowing reports.

My 2nd worst experience to date (1st is w/ Sprint)

Overall Rating:
1.3 out of 5
By: Felicia Hale on Saturday, September 22, 2007
From: Milwaukee, WI (United States)
Experience: 10 Months
Pros: technical support

Cons: dropped calls, delayed billing

Summary: In my profession, I need as much reliability as possible and Verizon Wireless seemed to have what I needed so I chose them. They have something called "delayed billing" which almost every carrier has but VZW's is different because these incurred charges can take up to 90 days to come through (and for me they were billed simultaneously) which ended up in a LOT of surprise bills (one totaled $667.82). Another issue that I've had w/ VZW was dropped calls. At first, I explored every variable to this problem that I could think of (incl. changing phones a few times and adding a reception booster), and, after eliminating them, I still had too many dropped calls. Needless to say, I began feeling bamboozled by paying for these flaws (literally) so I decided to "fire" them. One of the best decisions I've ever made.

Pros: Good tech support.Helpful service reps when you can get through the menu from hell.

Cons: Dropped calls, dropped calls and more dropped calls.

Summary: Verizon used to be the VERY BEST of the national carriers.Good service,Good signal strenght, good phones.I drive nationwide,so a good connection is important.4 years ago I almost never dropped a call even in remote locations. Now I can't get in a complete conversation, even in the largest cities.Like most big companies they don't care about their customers or the service they provide."The Network,"is not what it once was.

RIDING ON OLD TIMES - NOT TRUE in 2007

Overall Rating:
1.7 out of 5
By: sam gray on Wednesday, September 05, 2007
From: Miami, FL (United States)
Experience: 7 Months
Pros: It's an AVERAGE company with HIGH costs. Advertizing it as "the network'"is great marketing to cover up what is going on. I trusted old news, the CONSUMER REPORT ARTICLE 2005 but it's not accurate in 2007. Every store gave a different explanation to problems, finally one manager in Florida told the truth. Verizon is taking down towers. Result is in some areas no COMMUNICATION FOR MORE THAN A DAY! 288, selection 2 never worked. Pro? Average now, high prices.

Cons: Half and half service, dropped calls even in cities, takes an average of 3 tries to complete a call. Sells MEDIOCRE phones as "excellent yet phone on display is 5 models behind in quality so beware of store info. EX: Poor technology, poor battery, impossible to text at nite, turns dark so can't see letters, promotions exagerated, ie, free pictures but really 25 cents each, etc. etc.Technician called my phone "a piece of junk' - manager eager to exchange it but could not improve the service.Veriz

Summary: Shop around and don't believe the adds.
And don;t believe the Verizon of 2 years ago works in 2007.
The current one is riding on OLD reputation and will be mediocre for 2 or 4 more years - towers being rebuilt.
Shop elsewhere unless it's the only phone you can get and then try pay-as-you-go along with a phone card.
Will cost much less and get better service. Wish I had known. Expensive experience!

Please, I want to come back!

Overall Rating:
5 out of 5
By: Sabrina Lambert on Saturday, September 01, 2007
From: Santa Clara, CA (United States)
Experience: 2 Years
Pros: Great Customer Service, Phones, Customer Service, ALWAYS a Clear Signal, Customer Service

Cons: I'll let you know when I come across one

Summary: I seriously regret the day I dropped this service. I thought I'd try to save money by switching companies - my cell phone life has been a living hell ever since! I have tried all of the major providers (Cingular with & without AT&T, Sprint, Nextel, Metro)and hands down, Verizon is by far superior. I won't go into the horrid details, but my word! I can't believe that we, as consumers & end users, are allowing these companies to straight rape, pillage & plunder the way they do. I mean, even my worst dates will offer dinner & a movie. I just threw my "Gettro" phone out the window today on the freeway. I'll be taking this months payment to the first Verizon store I see in the morning. At least I'll have some sanity back in one area of my life!
